What is an eating disorder ?
Eating disorders are abnormal eating behaviors characterized by a disturbed relationship with food and stressful thoughts and emotions. They are associated with disturbed eating patterns that affect the body’s digestive system and interfere with psychological well-being. Eating disorders occur most commonly among women, especially teenagers but they can affect any gender at any age. Social media and television may influence young people into wanting to be to skinnier and look just like celebrities, no matter the cost to their health. This disturbs their mental peace and makes them follow an unhealthy and poor dietary lifestyle that affects their future well-being. Such people may feel ashamed and embarrassed and stop themselves from having treatment. Social stigmas play a key role. Those suffering from an eating disorder need to be provided with a comprehensive approach to treating eating disorders that will provide long-lasting change.
There are different variants of eating disorders ranging from starvation to binge-eating and spitting food out:
Rumination Disorder
This disorder is associated with regurgitation and re-chewing of swallowed food which is then either re-swallowed or spat out. It is triggered as a result of severe stress or physical illness. This disorder is more common in children and adolescents but occurs in adults as well.
Bulimia Nervosa
People suffering from this disorder lose control over what and how much they are eating. Usually, such behaviors are associated with feelings of shame and embarrassment. Most people suffering from bulimia adopt a lifestyle to counteract the effects and alleviate the guilt associated with their behavior.
Binge-Eating Disorder
Binge-Eating Disorder is characterized by frequent eating in large amounts until uncomfortably full. People suffering from bulimia divide their day into episodes of binges and experience a loss of control over their appetite.
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
It involves irregular eating patterns leading to failure to meet the nutritional requirements. However, it does not represent food restriction. It can lead to severe under-nutrition if not treated in time. PICA: PICA is a disorder in which people consume non-food products (dirt, clay, paper, crayons, paint, etc) persistently. This disorder can’t be linked to young children since they are at their developmental stage. However, adults that show such inappropriate behaviors are referred to as PICA patients.
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia Nervosa is one of the most common eating disorders that is characterized by self-starvation due to fear of gaining weight or becoming fat. It has a restrictive type which includes people that lose weight through strict dieting, fasting, and excessive exercise. It has another type; the binge-eating/purging type which includes people that have scheduled binge-eating or purging behaviors.
Why is early treatment critical?
An eating disorder is not a choice. The severity of this condition is often not understood and can cause consequences. If not treated on time, eating disorders can cause serious diseases and illnesses like organ failure and even death. Research shows that early diagnosis and treatment improve recovery, reduce signs and symptoms, and prevent further illnesses. Detecting and treating disorders early means saving lives!
One of the most effective interventions is in-person or online eating disorder programs that provide eating disorder treatment through coaching. They also collaborate with your treatment team, including dieticians and psychologists, if you have one.
